Verifind – The Next Generation of Wayfinding

Modulex is known for delivering innovative solutions in signage and wayfinding, where advanced technology is combined with a deep understanding of user needs. With the development of Verifind, Modulex wanted to take an ambitious step towards the future of wayfinding by using eye-tracking technology to enhance navigation in complex environments such as hospitals, airports, and shopping centers. The challenge was to create a system that not only optimized visual communication but also minimized stress and frustration for visitors, while being practical and easy for businesses to implement.

The vision was clear from the start: to develop an innovative and data-driven solution that could provide valuable insights into user behavior and navigation patterns, while also creating intuitive and user-friendly wayfinding systems. The goal was to improve the navigation experience without compromising on design or efficiency.

The primary goal of Verifind was to develop a standardized method for evaluating and improving wayfinding solutions, where technology could uncover hidden problem areas and provide concrete recommendations for improvement. By combining eye-tracking with data analysis, Modulex aimed to create a solution that was as intuitive for users as it was strategic for building designers.

Artlinco’s role was central to the project, leading the process of integrating service design and user testing from the early concept stages. Our responsibilities ranged from ensuring project progress, collaborating with partners, and leading test runs at locations such as Aarhus University Hospital to optimize both the technology and its practical implementation.

Task

Wayfinding plays a crucial role in ensuring that people can quickly and efficiently navigate complex buildings such as hospitals, airports, and large office complexes. However, as these environments grow larger and more complex, existing systems are increasingly unable to meet users’ needs. The lack of universal standards in wayfinding makes it difficult to assess the effectiveness of signage design, which presents a significant challenge for both property owners and designers. Users’ frustration with confusing signage often leads to stress and inefficiency, negatively affecting both user experience and business reputation.

By optimizing wayfinding, companies can reduce unnecessary signage.

Insight

Before the Modulex Verifind project was initiated, Artlinco conducted extensive market analyses to understand the challenges institutions and businesses face regarding wayfinding in complex environments. This included a thorough investigation of user experiences, behavior, and needs, as well as the dynamic demands that large buildings, such as hospitals and airports, require. Our goal was to gain a solid understanding of how signage and visual communication could be improved to minimize frustration and navigation issues for visitors.

Our analysis showed that traditional wayfinding solutions often fail because they do not consider how users actually move through a space. The complexity of buildings and the need for efficient navigation in dynamic environments demanded a solution that could not only deliver clear and user-friendly visual signals but also adapt continuously to changes and new data.

This insight formed the foundation for a service design approach that Artlinco specifically developed to address the challenges many businesses face in wayfinding. The solution needed to be flexible, so it could adapt to different types of buildings and constantly improve based on collected data. This ensured that Verifind was not only a technologically advanced solution but also a user-friendly and intuitive service that catered to the needs of both users and property owners.

“Artlinco brought a visionary approach that masterfully combined innovation, technology, and user understanding, helping us shape Verifind into a product poised for success while ensuring seamless process oversight and business alignment.”

Solution

Verifind uses eye-tracking technology to observe where people focus their attention, how long they look at certain elements, and how they navigate through a space. By analyzing this data, Verifind can identify where users experience confusion or disorientation and provide recommendations for improving signage and layout. This data-driven approach ensures that all changes to the wayfinding system are based on real user experiences and needs.

Artlinco’s creative approach and ability to identify relevant technology partners were crucial in creating a robust and flexible solution. Verifind can easily adapt to different environments and be updated continuously based on new data, making it a long-term and scalable solution for property owners.

With Artlinco’s deep expertise in service design and technological innovation, Verifind was developed as a solution that combines advanced eye-tracking technology with a profound understanding of user experience. Verifind was designed to create a dynamic and responsive wayfinding experience, where data on user behavior is collected and analyzed in real-time. This allows for signage adjustments and optimization based on how visitors navigate through a building.

Artlinco’s role in the project was essential – we led the process from the early conceptual stages, managed collaboration with necessary partners, and ensured that Verifind was thoroughly tested through user trials at Aarhus University Hospital. Our approach to project management and service design ensured that the project focused not only on technological solutions but also on how the solution could be adapted to various types of buildings, such as hospitals, commercial properties, and retail environments.

Better wayfinding in larger outdoor areas can reduce traffic congestion and thereby decrease CO2 emissions.

Results

The launch of Modulex Verifind has already produced remarkable results and received high praise from both users and property owners. By implementing Verifind, several institutions have been able to reduce the time it takes to navigate complex buildings, while significantly improving the user experience. This has led to a more efficient use of the property’s facilities and a notable reduction in complaints about inadequate guidance.

Verifind has not only enhanced physical navigation for visitors but has also created value for property owners by providing data-driven insights that enable ongoing optimization of signage and navigation. The detailed reports and analyses delivered through Verifind offer a precise assessment of where navigation systems fail and how they can be improved. This evidence-based approach to wayfinding has revolutionized how buildings can enhance the user experience.

Through the development of Verifind, Artlinco has cemented its position as a leading partner in strategic innovation and service design. Our work has demonstrated how technology and design can be combined to create solutions that not only meet users’ needs but also deliver value for businesses. Verifind has set new standards for how future wayfinding can be optimized through technology and user insights, resulting in both improved navigation and increased efficiency in building layouts.

Following Verifind’s implementation, the solution has already been recognized for its innovation in improving the wayfinding journey for people using eye-tracking technology, and it won the “Best New Resource” award at SEGD NEXPO in 2024.
